Introduction to Heavy Equipment Service and Repair

Description: In this course the student will be given an overview of heavy equipment systems, including the operation and interpretation of precision measuring tools and meters. Basic function and usage of trade related hand and power tools, along with hydraulic and pneumatic operations in an applicable trade format, in addition to motive power safety and WHMIS will be covered. A major component of this course will deal with part and component identification and location.

  2. Identify and service fundamental heavy-duty equipment engine components and subsystems to maintain optimal engine longevity that complies with manufacturers’ specifications.
  3. Identify and service fundamental heavy-duty equipment electrical components and systems to maintain component performance that complies with manufacturers’ specifications.
  4. Assess fundamental heavy-duty equipment fuel components and subcomponents using a variety of basic test equipment to maintain fuel component function that complies with manufacturers’ specifications.
  5. Identify and service fundamental heavy-duty equipment drive train components and systems to maintain the drive train’s peak operational condition that complies with manufacturers’ specifications.
  6. Identify and service fundamental heavy-duty equipment suspension, steering, brakes, and wheel end components to maintain vehicle integrity that complies with manufacturers’ specifications.
  7. Identify and inspect fluid power components using basic testing procedures and equipment to maintain fluid power components that comply with manufacturers’ specifications.
  8. Use customer service and communication best practices to support client and business relationships in a heavy-duty equipment repair facility.
  9. Use information technology to access manufacturer maintenance, repair specifications, updates and procedures for heavy duty equipment.
  10. Develop and use personal and professional strategies and plans to improve professional growth, job performance, and work relationships.
  11. Complete all assigned work, logs, records, and documentation to comply with industry standards; established policies and procedures; codes and regulations; and in accordance with ethical and environmentally responsible principles.
  12. Use hoisting and rigging techniques to safely support, move and extract heavy duty equipment components in accordance with industry standards.
  13. Perform soldering operations, heating, welding and cutting using oxy fuel welding and GMAW to repair.
  14. Select and use various tools for specific applications to safely and accurately inspect, test and repair heavy duty equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommended guidelines and specifications.
