Description: This course introduces students to the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills needed for academic and workplace success. Students will analyse a variety of texts and apply the steps of planning, writing, and revising to produce writing that meets the expectations of selected audiences and purposes. The course prepares students for college-level writing tasks, research, and documentation by asking them to produce clear, informed, and purposeful documents relevant to both academic and professional contexts.

Description: This self-directed course focuses on introducing new students to the supports, services, and opportunities available at Conestoga College. By the end of this course, students will understand the academic expectations of the Conestoga learning environment, as well as the supports available to ensure their academic success. Students will also be able to identify on-campus services that support their health and wellness, and explore ways to get actively involved in the Conestoga community through co-curricular learning opportunities.

Description: This course focuses on developing awareness and skills for the student to safely manage and conduct him or herself within a variety of employment settings. Through the units of the course, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding and knowledge of general Health and Safety guidelines, including WHMIS, Fire Safety and Workplace Violence. The unit on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act will instruct the student on the requirements for Accessible Customer Service and Integrated Accessibility Standard Regulations. General information on Safe Driving, Privacy of Information and Hand Washing will be addressed as well. The course also provides participants with critical information regarding their insurance coverage (WSIB or other) while employed. As well as guidelines to follow in the event of an injury. Participants will receive a printable Record of Completion upon successful conclusion of this course, in order to demonstrate awareness of safe working practices to their employers.

Description: This course will introduce students to the importance of working in groups in the field of recreation and leisure services. Students will examine the diversity of roles, responsibilities and contributions of all members involved in the provision of recreation, leisure, and wellness programs, events, and services. They will identify the strengths, needs and diverse abilities of all group members to develop a plan for incorporating their contributions towards a common goal.

Description: This course will introduce students to concepts related to healthy living for individuals, groups, and communities. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the benefits of holistic healthy lifestyles and the assumptions related to health and wellness over the course of an individuals’ lifespan will be discussed. In addition, students will identify opportunities for promoting and implementing recreation, leisure, and wellness initiatives. Students will examine their own personal relationship with health and understand how they can enhance and support their own wellness.

Description: This course will introduce students to the scope and diversity within the field of recreation and leisure. Students will identify and describe areas within the field through the exploration of local, provincial, and national best practices that frame and inform these sectors. Through integrated experiences, students will explore and defend the personal, social, economic, and environmental benefits of various recreation and leisure services. The diversity of career options will be explored and related to their development as a professional. Personal contributions, responsibilities and accountabilities will be identified as students prepare for their first work integrated learning experience.

Description: This course will identify the foundations of inclusion and access in recreation programs and services exploring how these principles impact feelings of belonging and contribute to meaningful community building and engagement. Students will explain, compare, and apply the principles of offering welcoming, accessible, and inclusive programs and services that meet the shifting recreational needs of current and future participants. Students will also examine how societal attitudes and unconscious bias have shaped approaches to access and inclusion, which has historically established barriers and constraints to full participation.
