Admission procedures
- Academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
- Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C, and post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
- Selected applicants meeting the minimum academic requirements (85% for Fall 2024) are invited.
- The digital portfolio involves a short essay response and gives applicants the opportunity to present non-academic credentials that support their application. Digital portfolios should include proof of all the following :
- volunteer experience.
- leadership experience (e.g., leadership course, letter of reference demonstrating leadership qualities, coaching, or refereeing).
- certifications (e.g., language certifications, diplomas, gentle persuasive approach (GPA) certificate or Equity Diversity Inclusive Accessible (EDIA) certificate).
- earned awards (e.g., scholarships, sports awards, or bursaries).
- any document not listed above that highlights your attributes and skills as a potential Respiratory Therapist.
- Selected applicants will be sent detailed information about submitting a digital portfolio.
- Final selections are made using a formula that weighs academic strength and the scored digital portfolio.
- A sound mathematical and English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admissions selection process. Minimum cutoffs may apply.
Program requirements
- Introductory word processing or keyboarding is recommended.
- Textbook costs are approximately $2,000 over the course of the program.
- Students need to bring your own device for computer testing in the classroom.
- This program uses eTexts.
- Mandatory work-integrated learning (WIL) document requirements must be completed by students prior to student WIL experiences. Successful WIL completion is required for students to progress to program completion. To qualify for WIL experiences, students must present the following at the start of the program in accordance with pre-admission information provided by the College:
- A complete immunization record including MMR, Tdap, varicella, COVID-19 and hepatitis B. Seasonal flu vaccination is required during flu season (October – March).
- TB Testing: Evidence of current 2-step or previous 2-step + current 1-step if more than one year has passed since 2-step testing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the Heart and Stroke Foundation (must be completed in Canada).
- An annual Police Check for Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS). Police Checks must be clear of any unpardoned criminal offences. An unclear criminal record will result in the inability to participate in WIL experiences meaning the student will not be able to successfully complete the program. Acceptance for WIL is at the discretion of the agency; some agencies may request students to provide a VSS completed within six months of WIL start date.
- In addition, students are responsible for costs associated with respirator fit testing required for WIL experiences.
